Trade Ministry Incident

Trade Ministry Incident
   (September 17, 1988)
After troops fired on demonstrators from the roof of the Trade Ministry on Strand Road in downtown Rangoon (Yangon), an angry crowd surged into the building, intent on killing them. They were dissuaded from doing so by opposition leaders Aung Gyi and U Tin U, but the crowd took away the soldiers' weapons. Military Intelligence director Khin Nyunt later cited the incident as an example of how Burma was slipping into anarchy, attempting to justify the power seizure by the State Law and Order Restoration Council on September 18, 1988.
